Northwood Presbyterian marks 50 years

Northwood Presbyterian Church, 6721 N. Monroe St., is celebrating 50 years of worship with a weekend party.

There will be an open house today from 6 to 8 p.m. with special music, a presentation about the last 50 years and bulletin board displays about each decade. There also will be special desserts served.

There will be a celebration banquet Saturday from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at Mukogawa Fort Wright Institute, 4000 W. Randolph Road. Former pastors from over the years will speak at the dinner.

The banquet costs $26.

On Sunday from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., the church will hold a special service. A coffee hour will follow the service.

Speaker event

Whitworth University, 300 W. Hawthorne Road, will present Martin Marty, a scholar of American religion today at 7:30 p.m. in the Cowles Auditorium on the school’s campus.

Marty will speak of “A Global Local Faith, a Local Global Faith: Christian Possibilities Today.”

Marty is a professor emeritus at the University of Chicago and an ordained Lutheran pastor.

Orthodox Holy Week

Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 1703 N. Washington St., will observe Holy Week starting with a Bridegroom Service Sunday.

The orthodox Palm Sunday, Holy Monday and Holy Tuesday services help prepare the faithful during Christ’s Second Coming. All of these services will be at 7 p.m.

On Wednesday at 7 p.m., the church will observe Holy Unction, where the church members will be anointed with sacramental oil and complete the Lenten process of repentance and preparation.

Special service

St. David’s Episcopal Church, 7315 N. Wall St., will present a Celtic Eucharist service today at 7 p.m.

The theme will be “Proclaiming Resurrection,” which will include a belated tribute to St. Patrick. Anyone attending is invited to wear green and bring a snack to share at the reception following the service. For more information, call at 466-3100.

Concert

The Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, 127 E. 12th Ave., will host the Whitworth University Choir Sunday at 3 p.m.

The choir’s spring concert entitled, “Ring in the Thousand Years of Peace,” will feature music from J.S. Bach, Robert Schumann and more.

Spring food bazaar

The Spokane Buddhist Temple, 927 S. Perry St., will present a Spring Food Bazaar in conjunction with Japan Week Sunday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The temple will serve a teriyaki chicken dinner with rice and coleslaw for take out for $10 each. There will also be senbei for sale for $3.50 a bag and a bake sale.

Christian singles groups

•The Christian Singles Fellowship will meet Saturday at 7 p.m. in the fellowship hall of North Addison Baptist Church, 6120 N. Addison St.

This month’s guest speaker is Craig Holmes who will discuss, “Thinking of an Upgrade.”

Spokane Christian Singles will present a seminar Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Mission Community Presbyterian Church, 2103 E. Mission Ave.

The seminar, “How to Avoid Marrying a Jerk or Jerkette,” will discuss how to spot a bad romantic match. Singles ages 20 to 50 are invited to attend, and attendees are asked to bring a snack or beverage to share.
