Zags frosh dazzles

Freshman Cody Martin, making his first career start, pitched a complete-game eight-hitter Sunday as Gonzaga completed a three-game West Coast Conference sweep of Portland with a 5-1 win at Patterson Baseball Complex.

Martin (2-0) struck out two, walked one and allowed one earned run.

Ryan Wiegand staked the Bulldogs (26-16, 5-6) to a 1-0 lead in the second with his team-leading ninth home run. Danny Meier of the Pilots (17-23, 2-10) led off the fifth with a homer.

•Bobby Coyle’s one-out RBI single in the eighth snapped a 2-all tie and allowed 22nd-ranked Arizona (25-11, 6-6) to complete a three-game sweep of Washington State (19-18, 3-9) with a 4-2 Pacific-10 Conference win at Kindall Field in Tucson, Ariz.

•David Cooper’s two-out RBI single in the ninth gave eighth-ranked California (26-10-2, 7-5) a 5-4 win over Washington (24-14, 4-5) in Pac-10 play at Evans Diamond in Berkeley, Calif.

Track and field

Washington State, ranked 18th, was named men’s team of the meet at the 50th annual Mt. San Antonio College (SAC) Relays at Walnut, Calif.

Cougars sophomore Trent Arrivey won the high jump at 7 feet, 1/2 inch. Jeshua Anderson was the top collegiate finisher (50.39 seconds) in the 400-meter hurdles invitational. Barry Leavitt won the University/Olympic Development 400 hurdles in 51.90.

•Idaho senior Russ Winger won three events and broke two stadium records during Saturday’s Dave Rankin Invitational at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind.

Winger’s winning shot put mark of 66 feet, 9 3/4 inches was a stadium record and the NCAA’s best this season. His discus throw (197-6) was also a stadium record.

Vandals athletes also set 10 NCAA regional-qualifying marks Saturday at the VS Athletics Beach Invitational in Norwalk, Calif. Marcus Mattox led the way with a school-record 208-10 in the men’s hammer.

Golf

Jordan Carter finished two rounds at 5-over-par 149 to tie for fifth place and lead Whitworth’s men to second place at the Northwest Conference championship at Apple Tree Golf Course in Yakima.

Andrew Parrott and Connor McCracken tied for sixth at 150 for the Pirates, who shot 605 to trail Linfield by 14 strokes. Pacific’s Max Bonk was the medalist with a 3-under 141.

•Krystal Pitkonen placed fifth and led Whitworth’s women to second place at the NWC championship at Aspen Lakes Golf Course in Sisters, Ore.

Pitkonen finished two rounds at 170, nine shots behind champion Whitney Ueno of Willamette. Pacific won the team title with a 682, 20 shots ahead of the Pirates.

Tennis

No. 3 singles Conor Feeney defeated Senthil Chidambaram 6-2, 6-3 to secure the win as Gonzaga’s men defeated Santa Clara 4-2 to place seventh at the WCC championship at Santa Clara, Calif.

•Aglaya Kokurina’s 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 victory over Megan Sporndle at No. 1 singles propelled Gonzaga’s women to a 4-3 win over Portland, clinching seventh place for the Bulldogs at the WCC championship at Moraga, Calif.

Softball

Ashley Fargher (University High) homered twice, including a grand slam in the second, as Community Colleges of Spokane defeated Highline 9-6 at the Yakima Crossover Tournament.

The Sasquatch (20-12) finished 2-2 at the tourney after Mt. Hood defeated them 10-2 behind Lauren Hadenfeld’s four-hitter.

•Halley Cey and Lacey Parry both finished 3 for 4 with three RBIs as Whitworth (14-19, 11-10) earned a split of an NWC doubleheader with a 10-6 win over Willamette (23-7, 17-5) at Salem, Ore.

The Bearcats won the opener 14-4.

Soccer

Grant Lundberg (Gonzaga University/Lewis and Clark High) scored twice to lead the Spokane Spiders to a 5-1 exhibition win over the Vancouver Olympics at Greyhound Park.

Spokane, 1-1 in exhibitions, opens its Premier Development League season May 3 at Spokane Falls CC against the Yakima Reds.

Rowing

The fifth-ranked Washington State women won 11 of 12 races at the weekend’s Stanford (Calif.) Invitational at Redwood Shores.

The Cougars’ varsity 8 defeated Stanford, Central Florida and Victoria during the two days.

•Gonzaga’s women’s varsity 4+ defeated Dartmouth College at the Charles River Challenge in Boston.

•Gonzaga’s men swept five races from WSU on Saturday to win their 18th Fawley Cup in 19 seasons at Wawawai Landing, Wash.
