Weary Bulldogs lose to Gauchos

Junior forward Heather Bowman scored a game-high 16 points with eight rebounds, but the Gonzaga women’s basketball team lost to Santa Barbara 59-47 on Sunday in Santa Barbara, Calif.

Vivian Frieson added 11 points and seven rebounds for the Bulldogs (8-2), who had their lowest scoring output since losing 85-46 to Middle Tennessee State in the 2007 NCAA tournament. It was GU’s sixth road game in 15 days.

Margaret Johnson scored 13 points and Emillie Johnson added 11 for the Gauchos (3-3).

•April Cook scored 18 points and fellow freshmen Jazmine Perkins and Rosie Tarnowski each added 14 as Washington State won its third consecutive game, 73-52 over Milwaukee at Friel Court.

The Cougars (5-2) trailed 27-22 at the half despite outrebounding the Panthers 24-15 and forcing 19 first-half turnovers. But WSU started the second half with an 18-2 run to turn the game around.

•Derisa Taleni’s shot as time expired rolled off the rim as Idaho fell to Long Beach State 55-54 in Moscow. The Vandals (2-5) were 12 of 22 from the free-throw line and missed a number of short-range shots.

•Community Colleges of Spokane lost to Lane Community College 72-45 in the championship game of the Everett (Wash.) Community College Classic tournament. Kelsey Stillar, who was named to the all-tournament team, led the Sasquatch with 12 points. Kami Clark, also named to the all-tournament team, added seven points with five rebounds.

Junior hockey

Dylan Tappe scored twice and Jake Peterson had two assists as the Spokane Braves beat the Kamloops Storm 4-3 in Kamloops, British Columbia. Connor Olstad and Ryan Maul also scored for the Braves, and Spokane netminder Michael Smith made 39 saves.
