Cougs handle Vandals

MOSCOW, Idaho — Aron Baynes scored 18 points, 12 in the second half, to lead Washington State past cross-border rival Idaho 55-41 tonight.

Washington State (8-3), leading 27-26, went on a 6-0 run with 16:58 remaining to go ahead by seven.

Idaho (6-6) pulled within 39-38 with 10:59 left. But the Vandals missed their next six shots as the Cougars used a 10-0 run to build a 49-38 advantage with 5:39 remaining.

Terrence Simmons hit a 3-pointer to end the run, but Idaho missed its next four attempts while Washington State ran out the clock.

The Vandals hit just 31 percent (16-of-51) of their shots, including just 28 percent (5-of-18) from 3-point range. Washington State shot 46 percent (25-of-54).

Taylor Rochestie added 11 points for the Cougars.

Former WSU guard Mac Hopson led the Vandals with 10 points. Kashif Watson added nine points and Marvin Jefferson grabbed 10 rebounds and had three blocks.
