Sixth body found in sugar refinery

The Spokesman-Review

Search crews recovered another body Sunday from a sugar refinery devastated by a massive explosion, raising the number of confirmed deaths to six, the state’s top elected fire official said.

Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner John Oxendine said crews removed the body from the debris of the Imperial Sugar refinery shortly before ending search operations at sunset.

There were still two workers missing in the smoldering remnants of the plant that exploded last week, sending dozens of workers to the hospital with burns and other injuries.

Sugar still burning in two of the refinery’s 100-foot storage silos threatened to weaken the towering structures to the point of collapsing if the fire isn’t extinguished soon, Port Wentworth Fire Chief Greg Long said earlier.

Striking writers to vote on contract

The Writers Guild of America moved swiftly Sunday toward a resolution of its three-month-old strike, with guild leaders deciding to recommend a tentative contract to members and ask them to vote on a quick end to the walkout.

Membership meetings will be held Tuesday in New York and Los Angeles to allow writers to decide whether the strike should be brought to a speedy end, said Patric Verrone, president of the guild’s West Coast branch.

“This is the best deal this guild has bargained for in 30 years,” Verrone said.
