Toledo team hooks fish

From the city that brought the world the Mud Hens comes another unusual mascot.

Toledo’s minor league hockey club will be called the Toledo Walleye.

Named after the fish that inhabits Lake Erie, the team’s logo sports a snarling Walleye with a missing tooth.

Club officials say the new name is one of a kind and will help merchandise sales and appeal to all age groups.

Beavers in deep after trash talk

Two Oregon State players could be disciplined for trash talking and a cell phone call before Oregon State’s 97-59 loss to Washington last week.

Senior forward Marcel Jones and freshman center Sean Carter got into a verbal altercation with Washington players at the end of the Huskies’ practice on Friday.

Later, Jones reportedly left a cell phone message for Washington guard Joel Smith, threatening another clash.

Oregon State interim coach Kevin Mouton said he was considering disciplinary action for Jones and Carter.

“I heard a comment that winners talk after games, and losers talk before they lose. That sums it up in a nutshell,” said Mouton.

Oregon State has lost a school-record 15 straight games.

Coach won’t live in Tehran, quits

Javier Clemente’s refusal to live full time in Iran eventually cost him the nation’s top soccer job.

Iran and Clemente parted ways after the Spaniard declined to reside permanently in the country rather than just travel to Iran before matches.

Ali Kaffashian, head of Iran’s football federation, said Clemente refused to sign an addendum to his contract allowing him to leave Iran only twice a year for vacation.

“After they changed the contract 30 times, I felt like I was wasting my time and I eventually was bored by it all,” Clemente said. “I’m not going to coach in Iran.”

Iran remains without a coach despite 2010 World Cup qualifiers having already started.
