Now that TVs come with bigger screens and smaller price tags, more people than ever are enjoying their favorite movies and programs in a large format. Unfortunately, that same big screen makes it difficult to hide the TV when it’s not in use. Now, however, there’s a do-it-yourself solution for woodworkers who don’t want to look at the TV when it’s turned off.

This handsome television cabinet project is designed to fit most 32-inch TVs (and some larger models). It features pocket doors for unobstructed viewing from any angle, plus big accessory shelves that will accommodate a satellite or cable decoder, a DVD player, a home theater system, a video game system and more.

How to build it

The project, made from standard dimensional lumber and veneer plywood (maple as pictured, but other species will also work), is easy enough for woodworkers of any skill level. Simply measure, cut out and assemble the pieces using glue and finish nails. To complete the cabinet, install the doors and apply finish of choice.

Overall, the television cabinet is about 60 inches tall by 42 inches wide by 22 inches deep. The interior cabinet will accommodate a TV measuring 33 inches wide by 33 inches tall.

How to order the plan

The Television Cabinet plan, No. 918, is $9.95 and includes step-by-step instructions with photos, a full-size traceable pattern for the angled cut on the leg, construction diagrams, a complete shopping list, cutting schedule and plywood cutting layout and a toll-free help line for project questions.

A package of three TV cabinet projects, No. C156, is $22.95 and includes this plan plus plans for a corner TV cabinet and an entertainment armoire. A free catalog picturing dozens of do-it-yourself projects is also available. Please include $4 for postage and handling and allow about two weeks for delivery.
