Bruins defeat Cardinals

DaVell Jackson scored a game-high 24 points on 8-of-12 shooting to lead the Salt Lake men’s basketball team to a 62-57 Scenic West Athletic Conference victory over North Idaho at Bruin Arena Friday night in Salt Lake City.

David Johnson and Humberto Perez had 14 points apiece to lead the Cardinals.

Salt Lake improved to 19-0 and 4-0 in conference play while NIC fell to 15-4, 1-3.

Women’s basketball

Krista Farr scored 17 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead Salt Lake (15-4, 4-0) to a 58-48 Scenic West Athletic Conference victory over North Idaho in Salt Lake City.

Ula Tauala led the Cardinals (13-5, 2-2) with 12 points.

Track and field

Canadian Olympian Angela White, a volunteer assistant at her alma mater, Idaho, set a meet record in winning the women’s long jump with a mark of 19 feet, 9¾ inches on the first day of the Cougar Indoor meet in Pullman.

Krista Larson of Utah State won the 20-pound weight throw (54-2¾) and Idaho’s Ben Wood the 35-pound weight throw (59-0).

Alis Draser, an Idaho freshman, won the women’s pentathlon with 3,388 points.

Wrestling

After losing the first two matches, North Idaho won six straight to defeat Western Wyoming 27-18 at the Apodaca Dual Showdown at Northwest College in Powell, Wyo.

At 184 pounds, the Cardinals’ Stevie Vasquez pinned Mike Hautala in 1 minute, 25 seconds to ensure the win.
