Investigation continues into fatal ATV crash

From Staff Reports The Spokesman-Review

A 50-year-old Elk man died Saturday when his ATV struck another machine and rolled.

Karl J. Young was returning home from an outing with a friend when the collision occurred at 6:25 p.m. on Conklin Road south of Button Road, Spokane County sheriff’s spokesman Sgt. Dave Reagan said in a news release.

Investigators say alcohol played a role, but the crash remained under investigation Monday.

Young was driving in the lead position with 37-year-old Mark E. Robertson following on another ATV.

Investigators said it appeared that Robertson’s machine made contact with Young’s and both ATVs rolled.

Young was either not wearing a helmet or did not have it properly secured. The helmet was found more than 70 feet away from the crash, Reagan said.

Young suffered severe head injuries and died at the scene.

Robertson was treated at a hospital for injuries, Reagan said.
