The Spokesman-Review

Three Washington Huskies men’s crews won national titles and the other two had runner-up finishes on Saturday’s final day of the Intercollegiate Rowing Association championships on the Cooper River in Cherry Hill, N.J.

The Huskies won the second varsity 8 title for the fourth time in the last five years and their varsity 4 and freshman 4 boats also won titles. The varsity 8 and freshman 8 boats placed second.

Washington won the Ten Eyck Trophy, honoring the regatta’s team points leader, for the second straight season. The Huskies amassed 214 points, seven more than runner-up California. Wisconsin (191) was third, followed by Harvard (157) and Brown (150).

The defending champion Huskies came up short in the featured varsity 8 race, losing to unbeaten Wisconsin. The Badgers finished the 2,000-meter race in 5 minutes, 31.17 seconds. Washington clocked in at 5:32.89, 7 seconds faster than its previous season best. It was Washington’s first loss since the 2006 IRA Grand Final at the same venue and snapped an 18-race winning streak.

Also at the regatta, the Gonzaga Bulldogs freshman 8 boat won its second race in as many days and finished 13th in the nation.

GU’s varsity 8 boat, racing in the championships for the first time in school history, placed third in the Fourth Level final for a 21st-place final ranking.
