Islanders top Rangers in SO

Associated Press The Spokesman-Review

Jeff Tambellini scored in the sixth round in the shootout, and the New York Islanders overcame a short-handed goal to beat the New York Rangers 4-3 on Tuesday night in New York.

Wade Dubielewicz, subbing for the second straight game for Rick DiPietro, made 27 saves through overtime and then turned aside five shooters in the tiebreaker. Rangers forward Nigel Dawes and Islanders captain Bill Guerin were the only others to score in the shootout.

Blake Comeau, Sean Bergenheim, and Trent Hunter had goals in regulation for the Islanders.

Panthers 1, Bruins 0 (OT): At Boston, goaltender Craig Anderson piled up 40 saves as Florida blanked the Bruins.

Nathan Horton scored 22 seconds into overtime to give the Panthers the win.

Alex Auld made 30 saves for Boston, but was beaten by Horton’s wrist shot inside the left post on the first shift of the extra period.

Sabres 5, Flyers 2: At Philadelphia, Derek Roy and Jason Pominville scored 18 seconds apart early in the third period to lift Buffalo over the Flyers.

Pominville and Maxim Afinogenov each had two goals for the Sabres.

Penguins 2, Lightning 0: At Tampa, Fla., Sidney Crosby missed scoring chance after scoring chance before finally setting up Maxime Talbot for the game’s first goal with only 2:47 remaining, and the Pittsburgh star made a victorious return in his first game in 61/2 weeks, leading the Penguins to a victory over Tampa Bay.

Devils 4, Maple Leafs 1: At Toronto, Zach Parise scored twice and Martin Brodeur made 40 saves as New Jersey beat Toronto.

David Clarkson and Brian Gionta also scored for the Devils.

Blackhawks 4, Wild 2: At St. Paul, Minn., Jason Williams had a goal and an assist as Chicago snapped Minnesota’s three-game winning streak.

Dustin Byfuglien, Duncan Keith and Craig Adams scored for the Blackhawks.

Blues 3, Kings 2: At St. Louis, Ryan Johnson scored his fifth goal of the season as the Blues snapped a six-game skid with a victory over Los Angeles.

St. Louis also got goals from Andy McDonald and Keith Tkachuk. Manny Legace stopped 31 shots for the victory.

Predators 5, Oilers 1: At Edmonton, Alberta, Martin Erat scored his first career hat trick as Nashville beat Edmonton.

J.P. Dumont and Ville Koistinen also scored for the Predators, while Tom Gilbert responded for the Oilers.

Avalanche 2, Canucks 1: At Denver, John-Michael Liles scored his first goal in nearly four months and Peter Forsberg showed little rust in his return as Colorado defeated Vancouver.

Forsberg didn’t appear as though he’d been out of the game for almost a year. He had a nifty give-and-go with Joe Sakic that Roberto Luongo turned aside and displayed some nice moves on his troublesome right foot.

Flames 1, Blue Jackets 0: At Calgary, Alberta, Craig Conroy scored in the third period and Miikka Kiprusoff made 39 saves as the Flames beat Columbus.

Conroy got the game’s only goal at 5:49 of the third.
