The Spokesman-Review

Tyson Van Winkle had three hits, including two doubles, and drove in two runs to spark Gonzaga University to a 9-3 non-conference baseball win over Utah Valley University Monday night at Patterson Baseball Complex.

AJ Proszek (1-0) limited Utah Valley (3-11-1) to seven hits and three runs in seven innings, pitching shutout ball for four innings, in earning the win in the opener of a three-game series.

Brandon Harmon and Cody Martin each saw an inning in relief with Martin continuing a solid rookie campaign by striking out the side in the ninth.

Utah Valley starter Aaron Brady (1-1) suffered the loss, allowing seven runs, six earned, on 11 hits over 5 2/3 innings.

Van Winkle’s two-run double in the eighth capped the scoring for GU (11-7).

•Community Colleges of Spokane swept a doubleheader from Green River in Ellensburg, 17-0 and 8-4, to run its win streak to seven games.

Matt Starr went 4 for 5 with a double and two RBIs in the first game and three Sasquatch pitchers combined on an eight-hit shutout.

Ian Atkinson went 4 for 5 in the second game with three RBIs, and Cody Reeves had a 7-for-11 day for CCS.

•Gonzaga junior catcher Grant Kveder has been named the West Coast Conference player of the week.

As GU won the Pepsi/Johnny Quik Classic last week in Fresno, Calif., with a 4-2 record, Kveder batted .500 (10 for 20), drove in five runs, scored five runs and stole two bases. That also earned him the tournament MVP award.

Kveder leads the Zags (10-7) with a .382 batting average. He has two doubles, 13 runs batted in and has scored eigtht runs.

•Washington State (13-5) is ranked No. 25 in this week’s Collegiate Baseball top-30 poll, the Cougars’ highest ranking since 1994, when they were also 25th. WSU is coming off a 3-3 trip in which it took three of four from previously No. 25 Oklahoma.
