Everest distinction one for the aged

Spokane climber Dawes Eddy, who’s trekking his way toward Mount Everest, has an interesting twist in his goal to possibly become the oldest American to climb the world’s highest peak.

International Mountain Guides reports that retired (2004) Itron CFO Dave Remington of Spokane is on the same Everest expedition led by Eric Simonson.

Eddy will be climbing with a Sherpa but technically “unguided.”

Remington is going with a guide.

Eddy is 66. Remington is 67!

Volunteers return to Iller Creek

On Saturday, volunteers will be picking up where they left off last fall to upgrade and reroute a popular hiking trail that leads to the Big Rock area south of the Dishman Hills.

Local members of the Spokane Mountaineers and Washington Trails Association invite others to help with this work party at the Iller Creek Conservation Area. Another work party is set for May 16-17 .

Grooming tapers off

Nordic ski trail grooming is winding down in the region, even though a generous snowpack was topped with new snow this week.

Mount Spokane has parked its big groomer for the season, but state park manager Steve Christensen said he would continue grooming with a snowmobile “as long as people keep coming up to ski.”

Fourth of July Pass grooming ended last week.

Schweitzer ski area closes for the season today.
