Few should resign

The Spokesman-Review

Coach (Mark) Few, you have ignorantly ushered in the era of hooliganism to Gonzaga basketball and its Spokane fans.

In my 50 years of being in and around sports, I have never seen such a blatant display of unsportsmanlike conduct, except in hockey, of course, which we are somehow told we should expect, accept and even applaud.

Elias Harris’ overt assault with a forearm to the throat of an opposing player (Dec. 5) should earn him a full-year suspension, or more favorably being cut from Gonzaga basketball, or Few should immediately resign. That kind of assault off-court would most likely result in jail time, and should also in this case.

Last time I checked, Gonzaga was a supposed “institute of higher learning,” which should teach intelligent play and finesse on the court not brain-dead brutality. What happened to smart, honest, fair play?

Coach Few, you have finally gone over to the dark side with your blood-thirsty young and dumb fans lapping it up. I’m no longer a fan. You have defended the indefensible and in so doing condone thuggery, which the Eastern teams resort to now, including violence to win at any cost. No thanks.

Looked like Harris’ forearm was to the upper chest area, not the neck; and the WF player afterward admitted feigning injury in hopes Harris would be tossed.

You need to look at the tape, before he gave a forearm to the upper chest the other WF player was himself being physical and it was retaliation. Harris didn’t just do that on purpose and for no reason. Even the announcer at the next game pointed that out but that’s right your not a fan any longer.

As a Gonzaga alum and an avid basketball fan, I was struck by the venom of your letter. Few should resign? Harris should be cut? Huh?

Mark Few is one of the classiest, most sportsmanlike figures in college basketball. We are beyond fortunate to have him and I hope he stays for the duration of his career. As for the supposed “assault” of Elias Harris, I would ask you reconsider your outrageous allegation. Jail time? Jeesh mister. Are you familiar with sports at all? Did you listen to any of the commentary or do any research at all? And did you even watch the tape?

Basketball isn’t table tennis. Players are going to play and sometimes unfortunate things happen. In my opinion, it was unfortunate Harris was ejected. That seems like the crime to me.

Let’s be honest, Dick, you have never been a fan of Gonzaga basketball and disengenuously wrapping yourself under the guise as a “former” fan reveals your true agenda.

My guess is you don’t know a forearm shiver from boxing out from a hockey check. Fifty years in and around sports and you DON’T KNOW the difference?

C’mon, Dick. Sit down with someone and have them replay the video and explain it to you. Mark Few has looked at it and came to a completely different conclusion. Or maybe you can just continue pontificating with your righteous indignation and call out for jail time for “boxing out.” Please

Many people I know have less of a problem with the aggressiveness of of Gonzaga’s players and more of a problem with the continued derogatory comments by members of the Kennel towards opposing players. Let’s keep the enthusiastic support of our team positive and stay away from the negativity directed towards the opponent!
