Lumberjacks edge Eastern

Sade Cunningham put the Lumberjacks ahead with a layin with 36 seconds to play and Northern Arizona held on for a 70-68 Big Sky Conference women’s basketball victory over the Eastern Washington Eagles Saturday night at Flagstaff, Ariz.

The Eagles held a 68-67 lead with 1:27 remaining when Nicole Scott hit the first of two free throws.

Northern Arizona’s Caty Huntington stole the ball from Scott with 47 seconds left. Cunningham scored her layup 11 seconds later to put the Lumberjacks ahead 69-68. Katie Schafer added a free throw for Northern Arizona with 11 seconds left to ice the game.

A Jessica Huntington shot at the buzzer bounced off the rim twice before missing for the Eagles.

Cunningham had 21 points and nine assists to lead the Lumberjacks (7-16, 4-6). Janelle Matthews added 14 points and Tiffany Amos 10.

Scott led the Eagles (9-14, 4-6) with 12 points, including Eastern’s final eight points, and also had nine rebounds, three blocked shots and three steals. Julie Piper had 10 points.

Whitworth 62, Linfield 58: Perimeter shooting has been a nemesis much of this season, but timely shots in the final few minutes were the difference as the host Pirates (12-9, 6-6) ended a three-game losing streak with a Northwest Conference victory over the Wildcats (3-18, 2-10).

Whitworth trailed 53-49 with 4 minutes remaining, but Natalie Orrell, Leah Pomante and Cassie Pilkinton buried 3-pointers on successive possessions to turn the deficit into a 58-55 lead.

Orrell added another bucket, and Pilkinton sank two free throws with 8 seconds left to seal the win.

Pilkinton finished with a game-high 23 points and Orrell chipped in 20 for Whitworth.

Sarah Amina and Lindsey Gummersall paced Linfield with nine points apiece.

CC Spokane 68, Wenatchee Valley 48: Meghan Eisenmann scored 17 points to lead the Sasquatch (12-8, 5-3) past the Lady Knights (5-17, 0-9) in Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges play at Spokane Community College.

Kelsey Stillar had 13 points and Richelle Dailey 11 points and eight rebounds for CC Spokane.

Maria Rustemeyer had 14 points and 15 rebounds for Wenatchee Valley.

The Sasquatch shot 45 percent in the first half when they opened a 38-16 lead.
