In brief: Police suspect man has more victims

A Post Falls man arrested after police say he gave a girl drugs, alcohol and a sexually transmitted disease may have more victims, according to police.

John M. Lewis Jr., 28, and his wife, Britta Lewis, 28, were arrested Jan. 30 after two 15- and 17-year-old Spokane Valley sisters told their mother they’d drunk alcohol and smoked marijuana with the couple during a four- or five-day stay at their home around New Year’s Eve, said Detective Sgt. Dave Beck.

Britta Lewis works with the girls’ mother in Spokane, and the girls were to baby-sit the couple’s 2-year-old son and 3-year-old daughter, Beck said. The couple’s children are now in child protective custody.

Police in Post Falls are working with Spokane police to identify a third victim in Spokane, Beck said, and to investigate “a possible pattern developing with ex-baby-sitters.”

John Lewis remains in Kootenai County Jail on a $100,000 bond.

Mead

Meeting Tuesday will cover landfill

Kaiser Aluminum & Chemical Corp.’s cleanup of an old landfill near Mead will be the topic of a Tuesday meeting.

The meeting will run from 7 to 9 p.m. in the atrium at Mt. Spokane High School, 6015 E. Mount Spokane Park Drive, in Mead.

Kaiser used the landfill from 1969 until 1974 to dispose of aluminum black dross from its Trentwood plant in Spokane Valley. Nearly 55,000 cubic yards of black dross, a byproduct of making aluminum, was dumped at the site.

The draft order requires Kaiser to investigate the extent of the chloride and nitrate contamination in nearby wells and springs. Public comments on the plan will be accepted through March 11.
