Pirates edge Generals

JR Jarrell had three hits and the Whitworth Pirates pounded out 15 hits and took a 6-5 college baseball victory over the Washington & Lee Generals (3-1) on Saturday at Peoria, Ariz.

Mitch Nelson, Landon Scott, Andrew Durant and Kevin Valerio added two hits apiece for the Pirates (1-3).

Nathan Johnson allowed an unearned run in 3 2/3 innings in relief to get the victory.

College softball

Lauren Maloney was hit by a pitch to lead off the bottom of the seventh inning, stole second base and scored on Wailana Buchanan’s single to give the North Idaho Cardinals a 4-3 Scenic West Athletic Conference victory over the Southern Idaho Golden Eagles in the completion of a suspended game from Friday, at Lewiston.

The team’s split the regularly scheduled doubleheader with North Idaho, winning the first game 3-2 and Southern Idaho winning the nightcap 5-4.

Buchanan scored the winning run on a two-out error in the sixth inning in the Cardinals’ victory.

Track and field

Washington State’s Robert Williams edged Idaho’s Paul Dittmer in a neck-and-neck finish to win the 60-meter hurdles, with both runners timing 7.84 seconds, to highlight the Vandal Collegiate Indoor meet at the Kibbie Dome.

Dittmer’s effort eclipsed his own two-week-old school record of 7.93.

Whitworth’s Alyssa Thompson broke her own school record in the triple jump, going 37 feet, 1 inch.

Dana Misterek broke the Whitworth men’s indoor record for the mile with finishing fourth with a time of 5:22.96.
