Area spring athletes honored

Billy Moon, University pitcher/outfielder and Greater Spokane League MVP was named to the Washington sportswriters 4A All-State Baseball first team.

Compiling the spring all-state teams for voting in baseball, softball and soccer is coordinated by Rene Ferran of the Tri-City Herald and chosen by high school sportswriters throughout the state.

Moon was the only GSL 4A selection. Outfielder Jake Partridge from Rogers was a 3A second-team pick.

Drew Ableman from Cheney was a first-team 2A outfield selection. Freeman catcher Jake Sullivan and outfielder Jacob Kitterman were 1A first-team choices as was Colfax infielder/pitcher Brandon Hoadley in 2B. Five area 1B players were selected.

Colton cleaned up in 1B with two baseball and four softball first-team players. Infielder Nick Heitstuman and outfielder Chase Druffel made it in baseball along with pitcher/infielder Jordan Wakefield (Curlew), outfielder Cole McCanna (St. John-Endicott) and infielder Travis Camp of state champion Wilbur-Creston. W-C’s Rich Jaeger is coach of the year.

Softball players from state-champion Colton are pitcher Brooke Vincent, infielders Courtney Druffel and Chelsea Meyer and outfielder Gabi Nilson. Also, Brad Nilson is coach of the year.

Area 1B teams dominated state choices. Inchelium’s pitcher Jordan Signor, catcher Serena Condon and outfielder Nikki Fry and infielder Marianna Raynor (St. Michael’s) made the first team.

In boys soccer, Cheney forward Austin Walker and defenders Paul Holloway (Cheney) and Tyler Florez (Riverside) were first-team selections.
