Gar-Pal stops T-O for state basketball bid

The Garfield-Palouse Vikings stole a victory at the District 9 2B boys basketball tournament at Walla Walla Community College on Saturday, and, along with it, a trip to state.

The Tekoa-Oakesdale Nighthawks held the lead for the entire game before Jordan Palmer hit two free throws with 30 seconds remaining to give the Vikings (20-4) a 39-38 victory and a trip to the state tournament.

After Palmer hit his two free throws, Gar-Pal’s Todd Pinter stole the ensuing inbounds pass and Tekoa-Oakesdale fouled Palmer again, sending him to the line again.

The Nighthawks (18-5) apparently did not realize that it was a 1-and-1 situation and when Palmer missed the free throw, the Vikings corralled the rebound and ran out the clock, ending Tekoa-Oakesdale’s season.

Palmer finished with 16 points, while Michael Jacobs had 13.

Brandon Hovde scored 14 for the Nighthawks.

District 7 2B boys

Lind-Ritzville 46, Selkirk 32: Jamie Stevenson scored 22 points and had four steals and five assists to help the Broncos (16-11) capture the third and final berth to the state tournament with a victory over the Rangers (16-10) at Mt. Spokane High School.

Jake Eichner hit two 3s to end the third quarter, capping a 12-4 run that broke the game open for Lind-Ritzville.

Northwest Christian 75, Davenport 50: Matt Zandbergen and Chase Ramey combined for 41 points to send the Crusaders (25-0) to state as the No. 1 seed.

Josh Zeiler scored 14 for No. 2 seed Davenport (17-7).

1A regional boys

The Brewster Bears (20-5) earned the third and final berth to state with a 52-48 win over the Freeman Scotties (20-3) at Moses Lake High School. The Chelan Goats (21-4) beat the Lake Roosevelt Raiders (15-7) 61-41 for 1-2 seeding. No details were reported.

District 7 2A boys

Cheney 54, Medical Lake 38: Daniel Igbinoba led a balanced scoring attack with 15 points and the fourth-seeded Blackhawks (10-11) eliminated the No. 5 Cardinals (8-13) with a victory at Cheney.

Three other Cheney players reached double figures in scoring.

Ray Erwin put in 14 points for ML.

Cheney will play at top-seeded West Valley on Tuesday when district play resumes.

Clarkston 83, Colville 51: Trey Sobotta had 22 points and the third-seeded Bantams (13-8) ended the season of the sixth-seeded Indians (7-14) at Clarkston. The Bantams will face Pullman at Pullman on Tuesday.

1A regional girls

Chelan 58, Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls) 38: The Goats (19-5) earned a trip to state by eliminating the Eagles (14-11) at Moses Lake. No details were reported.

Freeman 57, Cascade (Leavenworth) 26: The Scotties (23-0) earned the top seed to state with a victory over the Kodiaks (18-7).

Korina Baker scored 16 points, Carley Heinen 13, and Megan McIntyre 12 for Freeman. Ashley Wright paced Cascade with 11 points. The Kodiaks are No. 2 to state.

District 7 2B girls

Liberty 39, Davenport 24: Teara Cornmesser scored 12 points and the Lancers (18-9) captured the third and final seed to state with a victory over the Gorillas (15-11) at Mt. Spokane High.

Davenport’s Mariah Mielke scored 11.

Colfax 48, Lind-Ritzville 30: Kayla Johnson had 23 points, seven rebounds and four assists as the Bulldogs (23-2) earned the top seed to state with a win over the Broncos (18-9).
