Roundup: WSU rower makes all-region

Washington State rower Erica Williams has been named to the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association Division I All-West Region first team.

Lewis, a junior from London, Ontario, was part of the Cougars’ varsity 8 boat that was ranked in the top 20 throughout the season. The boat finished sixth at the Pac-10 championships.

All first-team all-region honorees are eligible to receive All-America accolades, which will be announced at the NCAA rowing championships this weekend.

Lewis is the ninth Cougar to receive the honor.

Adrienne Martelli of the University of Washington was also selected to the first team, and the Huskies’ Kayleigh Mack was selected to the second team.

Softball

Five North Idaho College softball players were named to the All-Region 18 teams.

Jessica Fagan, Lauren Maloney and Renae Kimbell were selected to the All-Region 18 first team.

Fagan is a sophomore outfielder from Spokane (Rogers). She stole 41 bases this season, the second most in a season and career at NIC.

Maloney is a freshman shortstop from Las Vegas, and Kimbell is a freshman catcher from Kennewick.

Amanda Crier of Coeur d’Alene and Wailana Buchanan of Vancouver, Wash., were chosen for the second team.

Track and field

The Washington State track and field teams are selling wristbands to help support Shawn Swartz, a freshman high jumper from Port Coquitlam, British Columbia, who is undergoing treatment for acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

The wristbands are crimson and feature the saying “Pride gives us the inner strength to persevere” along with “S.S./A.C.,” representing Swartz’s initials and his nickname, Air Canada.

Wristbands can be purchased starting Monday by contacting jumps coach Matt McGee at (509) 335-0288 or mdmcgee@wsu.edu.
