Shot Southern Miss walk-on punter Peter Wilkes is in critical condition at a Memphis, Tenn., hospital after being shot at his home in Union City, Tenn. Regional Medical Center officials said Friday that Wilkes was being treated in a critical care unit. Union City assistant police chief Perry Barfield said the case is under investigation as an accident or self-inflicted gunshot wound. Southern Miss officials retracted an initial news release that said Wilkes was shot Thursday night in an accident and had died Friday morning.

Injured Sacramento Kings swingman Francisco Garcia will have surgery after breaking his right forearm while lifting weights. The fifth-year player averaged 12.7 points in 65 games for Sacramento last season.

•Detroit Red Wings forward Johan Franzen is out for at least four months with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.

Fined Six defensive players have been fined by the NFL, including four for hits on quarterbacks. Tennessee defensive lineman Tony Brown drew the biggest fine, $10,000, for roughing the passer. He made helmet-to-helmet contact with Jaguars QB Da vid Garrard. Also fined were Dallas defensive tackle Jay Ratliff, New England defensive lineman Mike Wright, Baltimore DT Haloti Ngata,Chicago defensive end Adewale Ogunleye and Detroit cornerback Anthony Henry.

Resigned First-base and outfield coach Andy Van Slyke will not be returning to the Detroit Tigers. The team announced that Van Slyke “decided to pursue other opportunities” and will not come back next year for a fifth season.

Acquired The Arizona Diamondbacks acquired infielder Tony Abreu from the Dodgers to complete a trade that sent pitcher Jon Garland to Los Angeles.

Expected Italy soccer captain Fabio Cannavaro will join the team as scheduled Sunday despite failing a doping test. Cannavaro’s club team, Juventus, has said the failed test was the result of cortisone used to treat a bee sting.
