Sports in brief: Freshman QB Eglet will start

Football: Whitworth sophomore quarterbacks Andrew Durant and Cub Jansen are out for the season after sustaining injuries in Saturday’s loss to Linfield.

Freshman Taylor Eglet (above), a Lewis and Clark High graduate, will start Saturday’s road game against Puget Sound. Eglet ran for 34 yards and completed 9 of 20 passes for 83 yards and one TD in the second half last Saturday.

He’ll be backed up by freshman Brandon Gillespie.

Durant, the starter who had passed for 1,010 yards this season, suffered two cracked vertebrae in his lower back while absorbing a hit in the second quarter.

Minutes later, Jansen tore the MCL in his knee as he was tackled at the goal line while scoring a touchdown. There might be additional damage, but doctors have to wait for the swelling to go down.

Offensive lineman Zak Richardson (back) is expected to be a game-time decision.

Chiefs acquire goaltender

Hockey: The Spokane Chiefs acquired goaltender Michael Tadjdeh from the Lethbridge Hurricanes in exchange for an eighth-round bantam selection in the 2011 Western Hockey League draft.

Tadjdeh is in his second season in the WHL after appearing in 21 games last season with the Hurricanes.

The Calgary, Alberta, product had a 10-10-0-0 record and a 3.52 GAA and .873 save percentage.

The 18-year-old has appeared in three games this season and is 0-2.

The move gives the Chiefs three goaltenders: starter James Reid, Chase Martin and Tadjdeh.

Ex-Coug coach quits at Arizona

Women’s soccer: Former Washington State soccer coach Dan Tobias is leaving the Arizona Wildcats program in the midst of his seventh season.

Athletics director Jim Livengood announced Monday that Tobias was quitting for personal reasons.

The 2009 team carries a record of 3-9-1, worst in the Pacific-10, which gives him a UA career mark of 58-68-9.

The school’s student newspaper, the Daily Wildcat, reported that starting midfielder Leila Amini decided to leave the team at the end of September, becoming the ninth player to leave the program over the last year.

“The soccer environment has been deteriorating for the past few years since I’ve been here,” Amini told the Daily Wildcat last week. “People in the past have brought up issues to try to change the environment for the better, but unfortunately I don’t see any effort toward these changes.”

Tobias coached at Washington State from 1998 to 2002 before his hiring at Arizona.

He was 44-45-5 in five seasons at WSU.
