Prep roundup: Wildcats top Bullpups

Three taut matches exacted their toll and visiting Mt. Spokane breezed in game four to hand Gonzaga Prep its first defeat in Greater Spokane League volleyball action Tuesday night.

The Wildcats moved into a second-place tie with the Bullpups behind unbeaten Mead, both with 6-1 league records, winning 25-19, 22-25, 25-23, 25-9.

Mt. Spokane took a 2-1 lead following a two-point thriller in the third back-and-forth game. In game four, the Wildcats caught fire, jumping out to a quick lead and stringing points together to finish off the contest.

Annie Arnzen had 18 kills and Ixchelle Oleson 10 service aces as part of a balanced attack for the victors. G-Prep’s Haylee Brown had 25 assists and Lizzy Zabinski had 13 digs.

•In other GSL matches: Everyone contributed for Mead (6-0) in a three-game sweep at host Shadle Park (1-7). … Following a first-game loss, Lewis and Clark (5-2) won the next three to beat host North Central (1-6) 22-25, 25-12, 25-20, 25-15. •Great Northern League: The leaders all were victorious in league matches. Pullman (9-0) swept Riverside (4-5) 25-10, 25-14, 25-22, breaking a 17-17 tie in the third game. Shelby Cheslek had 15 kills and Katie Guettinger had 28 assists for Pullman. … West Valley (7-2), with some adjustments, got strong middle efforts from Latasha Lofton and Hannah Love during a 25-16, 25-13, 25-18 sweep over visiting Medical Lake (1-8). … With a 25-13, 25-12, 25-22 sweep at Cheney (3-6), Colville (7-2) remained tied for second place. Emily Pond took control early and finished with 12 kills for Colville. … KC McConnell’s 26 digs sparked host Clarkston (4-5) to a 25-8, 25-20, 22-25, 25-15 win over Deer Park (1-8).

•Great Northern League: A 1-2 finish by Ned Fischer and Colton Hastings sparked Colville to a 25-30 victory over Cheney in a boys showdown between unbeaten teams. The Indians’ (5-0) pair timed 16 minutes, 20 seconds and 16:26, more than 20 seconds in front of two Blackhawks (4-1). Colville’s next two scorers finished ahead of their Cheney counterparts to assure the win. Both teams beat Pullman (2-4). … In other meets, improved Deer Park (4-1) had the first three placers to sweep West Valley (1-4) 18-37 and Clarkston (1-5) 15-44 at home. Kellie Zakrzewski scored with time expiring in the second overtime on a direct free kick following an Eagles foul. Dee Dee Garbe scored first for WV (7-3 overall, 6-3, 19 points) 33 minutes into the match. Three minutes later, Brianna Estrellado tied the match for the Blackhawks (10-1, 8-1, 24) on a tap-in.
