Jesse Bruce was manning a machine gun in a Humvee when a mortar round landed inside 3 feet from him. He was seriously injured in the blast. While in Iraq he had seven diagnosed concussions in six weeks.

Forty feet above the ground, U.S. Army combat veteran Kyle Gazaway completes the Steps of Faith ropes course at Pinelow Park Retreat Center on Tuesday. The retreat combined adventure challenges with opportunities for peer support for 20 local combat veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder and other war-related injuries.

With gear provided by Evergreen Archery Club, combat veteran Darren Basinger takes aim at a target set up in a field at the Pinelow Park Retreat Center. Basinger, a member of the Washington Army National Guard, returned from Iraq in August.
