Pathways to Peace begins at Unity Church of Truth

One Peace, Many Paths will host an 11-day event, “Pathways to Peace, 2009,” Sept. 11 through 21 in various locations throughout the area.

The group was begun in 2008 by Spokane-area residents who want to promote peace throughout the religious and secular communities.

The Unity Church of Truth, 2900 S. Bernard St., will participate in the event Friday through Monday.

On Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Monday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., the church will present sand mandala construction and viewing. Sand mandala is artwork made from colored sands. The creation and artwork is believed to effect purification and healing.

There will be a reception and lecture by Karma Tensum, the executive director of Tibetan Children’s Education Foundation, Saturday from noon to 2 p.m.

There will be a traditional closing ceremony Monday at 3 p.m. Donations will be accepted for the TCEF during the event.

The church will also present a reader’s theater Friday at 7 p.m.

The play, “Mary Seacole,” is based on the life of a black Victorian nurse who served as a volunteer on the battlefields of the Crimean War.

Centennial celebration

Mission Community Presbyterian Church, 2103 E. Mission Ave., will celebrate 100 years of worship Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

On Friday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., there will be an open house with refreshments.

On Saturday at 6 p.m., the church will hold a celebration dinner and a performance by the Melody Singers, and there will be a special 10 a.m. service Sunday.

Celtic service

St. David’s Episcopal Church, 7315 N. Wall St., will present a Celtic Communion service today at 7 p.m.

The service’s theme will be “Thin Places” and a reception will follow.

Sunday school

Gloria Dei Lutheran Church and Amazing Grace Lutheran Church, 3307 W. Rowan Ave., will hold the first Sunday school of the new school year Sunday at 9:30 a.m.

Visitors can meet teachers and enroll their children in classes.

Music and movies

Plymouth Congregational Church, 1502 W. Eighth Ave., will present Dallas and Tanya Low as guest musicians and worship leaders Sunday at 10 a.m.

Pastor Gary Gardell will speak during the service and refreshments will be served following the event.

The Unity Church of Truth, 2900 S. Bernard St., will present “Baptists at Our Barbecue,” a film about a Mormon park ranger who moves to a town with 262 Mormons and 262 Baptists, Wednesday at 7 p.m.

•St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, 5720 S. Perry St., will have its Fall Kick-Off Community Dance and Barbecue on Sept. 18, from 6 to 9:30 p.m., in the church parking lot.

The family event includes live music, dancing, food and a cake walk.

Cost is $5 per person or $20 for the family. Children 5 and under are admitted free.

Family fun

St. Anthony Catholic Parish, 2320 N. Cedar St., will present its third annual Saints Charity Classic Car Show Saturday.

Entries and registration will be accepted from 7 to 10:30 a.m. and judging starts at noon. Awards will be presented at 4 p.m.

The event will feature street rods, vintage and muscle cars, pickup trucks and more.

Whitworth Community Presbyterian Church, 312 W. Hawthorne Road, will host fellowship, games and a ministry fair Sunday from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

The day will include classic cars, music, food and other activities.

To accommodate the events, services will be held at 9:30 a.m. in Quall Hall for a contemporary service, and a traditional service will be held at 10 a.m. in the church sanctuary.
