Roundup: Gonzaga shuts out Vandals

Sarah Rhodes’ goal in the 15th minute gave Gonzaga a 1-0 win over Idaho in non-conference women’s soccer action Sunday at Gonzaga Soccer Field.

Keepers Jessie Thalman (three saves) and Amy Danielson (one) posted their second combined shutout of the season for the Bulldogs (5-3-0).

Amber Pimley had a chance to tie the game late for the Vandals (5-4-0), but her shot was deflected by Danielson as time expired.

Gonzaga finished with a 15-12 shot advantage and an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks.

•Kiersten Dallstream scored twice and Brandi Vega added a goal and two assists as Washington State beat Stephen F. Austin 5-0 in Nacogdoches, Texas.

Emma Stolz and Megan Chapin also scored for the Cougars (6-2-0).

WSU’s five goals were the most the Cougars had scored since an 8-0 win over Gonzaga in 2002.

•Sidonia Davin’s second goal of the season was all Whitworth needed in a 1-0 win over George Fox in a Northwest Conference match at Whitworth Soccer Field.

Elizabeth Mattila earned the assist on Davin’s goal in the 21st minute. Krista Dietz earned the shutout for the Pirates (6-1, 3-0 NWC).

Men’s college soccer

New Mexico took an early lead and didn’t look back in a 3-0 victory over Gonzaga in the finale of the Nike/TLC Plumbing Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M.

The Bulldogs (4-2-2) finished second in the four-team tournament. Gonzaga beat Binghamton 2-1 in overtime Friday in its other tournament match.

Gonzaga’s Tye Perdido, Nick Love and Nick Barclay were selected to the all-tournament team.

•Kekoa Mountcastle scored twice in the second half as Whitworth used a flurry of late goals to beat George Fox 4-0 in Northwest Conference play in Spokane.

Brent Zahn scored in the 22nd minute for the only goal of the first half, and Keith Kirsch gave the Pirates some breathing room when he found the back of the net in the 79th minute. Mountcastle then scored twice to put the game out of reach.

Hockey

Aaron Hadley scored twice and Scott Morisseau notched three assists as the Beaver Valley Nitehawks beat the Spokane Braves 4-3 at Eagles Ice-A-Rena.

Zak Kroll opened the scoring with a goal late in the first period for the Braves, but Spokane allowed four unanswered Nitehawks goals before Jesse Collins and Dylan Tappe scored late in the third period.
