Music association hosts overseas art exchange

Billie Martin

The Elk Music Association is participating in the Global Art Project for Peace this year. The EMA’s art project is a vinyl hanging digitally created from a picture of a piece done by Elk children at Kids Art in the Park Day. The vinyl hanging was on display with four other area entries at the Pend Oreille Playhouse the first three weeks of April.

The Global Art Project promotes peace through art by connecting people of diverse cultural backgrounds around the world. Each April, the participants are matched with a person or group from abroad. Eighty countries are participating this year.

The EMA has been matched up with the Catholic Youth Choir at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church Newtown in Limbe, Cameroon, in central Africa. The EMA will send its art entry as well as last year’s Elk Tracks Christmas CD, “Elk Tracks – Gettin’ Back,” to the choir in Cameroon. The St. Elizabeth Youth Choir will send their creation to EMA.

The exchanges all take place the last week in April. After the five area participants receive their exchange pieces, they will be on display at the Pend Oreille Playhouse May 1 to May 15.

The exchange between EMA and the Catholic Youth Choir will be featured in the 2010 Gallery on the Global Art Project website, www.global artproject.org.

The Global Art Project for Peace headquarters and gallery is in Tucson, Ariz.
