Zags break 100 in win against Eagles

Courtney Vandersloot poured in a career-high 33 points on 12-of-17 shooting and doled out eight assists to lead Gonzaga (5-3) to a 101-74 victory over Eastern Washington (1-6) in nonleague women’s basketball Friday in Cheney.

Kayla Standish had a double-double, 13 points and 11 rebounds, and Katelan Redmon added 21 points for GU. Junior Tatjana Sparavalo led EWU with 13 points.

• Emily Guthrie hit a pair of 3-pointers to give Whitworth a 10-point lead with 2:35 remaining and made 1 of 2 free throws in the final 14 seconds to preserve a 79-76 victory for the Pirates (3-2, 1-0) in their Northwest Conference opener against Lewis & Clark (3-3, 0-1) in Portland.

• Korrie Bourn finished with 18 points and nine rebounds to lead Community Colleges of Spokane (2-1) to a 68-58 win over Umpqua (5-2) at the Bellevue tournament.

Volleyball

Kindra Calrson led all players with 18 kills and added seven digs, Becky Perry added 12 kills and No. 11 Washington (23-8) swept No. 7 Hawaii (29-3) in straight sets in the second round of the NCAA tournament in Seattle. The Huskies will play Nebraska in the round of 16 Friday in Seattle.

• Arlene Ferreira and Kayla Carlisle combined for 30 kills, and after trailing 14-13 in the third set, the No. 1 Lee Flames (39-0) scored 36 of the last 58 points to upend Lewis-Clark State (31-3) 3-1 in the NAIA National Championship quarterfinals in Sioux City, Iowa.

Lakeside-Nine Mile Falls grad Kelli Tikker led the Warriors with 13 kills and 14 digs.

Wrestling

Jamelle Jones (197 pounds) finished the opening day 2-1, and was the only North Idaho Cardinal to advance to today’s action at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invite. If he wins his opening match today, he will finish in the top eight in his weight class.

Hockey

Alex Ross had 21 saves as Castlegar (20-5) blanked the visiting Spokane Braves (15-15) 4-0.

Baseball

The Texas Rangers announced that Tim Hulett will return for his fifth season as manager of the Spokane Indians.
