Area roundup: Gonzaga thumps Fullerton

Senior Janelle Bekkering scored a career-high 26 points, hitting 10 of 11 field goals, as Gonzaga (10-3) beat Cal State Fullerton 101-52 in nonconference women’s basketball Thursday at McCarthey Athletic Center.

The Bulldogs broke ahead 14-0 and added a 25-0 second-half run that spanned more than 8 minutes. GU scored in triple figures for the third time this season.

Zags junior Kayla Standish finished 10 for 13 from the field to score 22 and added a game-high nine rebounds. Senior Courtney Vandersloot chipped in 14 points and 11 assists for the Bulldogs.

Lyndsey Grove scored 14 for the Titans (4-8).

Saint Mary’s 85, Idaho 71: Kate Gaze and Jasmine Smith combined for 44 points and the Gaels (7-7) used a 17-0 run late in the game to pull away from the Vandals (6-5) at Moraga, Calif.

Idaho trailed 60-55 after Derisa Taleni’s layup with 7:15 to play. Gaze started and ended the 17-0 run with 3-pointers.

The Vandals’ Yinka Olorunnife and Rachele Kloke combined for 39 points, hitting 15 for 33 from the field including three 3-pointers apiece.

Boys basketball

Priest River 74, Rogers 72: Max Salesky scored 35 points, hitting 6 of 11 on 3-pointers, and Eric Holbrook added 15 points and nine assists as the host Spartans (5-1) edged the Pirates (3-5). Rogers’ Therone Tillett made 5 of 7 3-pointers and tied Scott Zimmerman for team honors with 18 points.
