Holiday affects agencies, services

Here’s what’s open and closed for the New Year’s holiday:

Public agencies: Most government offices and courts will be closed as employees take Friday as the legal holiday for New Year’s Day. The Spokane County Building and Planning Department is also closed today for a staff furlough day.

The Spokane County Regional Animal Protection Service will be open Friday from noon to 5:30 p.m.

Mail: Most post office branches will be open Friday, and mail will be delivered as usual. Post offices will be closed Saturday for New Year’s, and no mail will be delivered Saturday.

In Spokane, mail placed in blue collection boxes after noon Friday will be picked up Monday.

The Riverside Avenue station in downtown Spokane will be closed Friday. Stations to close at noon that day are Liberty Park, 1502 E. Sprague Ave.; Dishman, 111 N. Vista Road; and Parkwater, 2020 N. Dickey Road. All others will be open during normal hours Friday.

In Kootenai County, post office stations will be open during regular hours Friday, and collection times will remain unchanged.

Garbage pickup: Garbage and recycling collection will be on normal schedules Friday in Spokane and Kootenai counties. Waste Management offices will be closed that day. The Waste-to-Energy Plant and transfer stations in Spokane County will be open Friday but closed Saturday. Kootenai County transfer stations also will be closed Saturday.

Liquor stores: All Washington state-run liquor stores will be open until 9 p.m. Friday, and will be closed on Saturday. Contract liquor stores may be open both days. In Idaho, liquor stores will be open during regular hours Friday and Saturday.

Banks: Many will close early Friday, and some will be closed all day. Call your branch for details.

Parking: Parking meters in Spokane do not have to be plugged Friday and Saturday.

Libraries: Spokane Public Library branches and the Coeur d’Alene Public Library will be closed Friday and Saturday.

Riverfront Park: The Ice Palace, Imax Theater, Spokane Falls Skyride and Carrousel will be open Friday and Saturday. Check www.spokaneriverfrontpark.com for hours of operation.
