In brief: Georgetown topples No. 2 Villanova

Men’s College Basketball: Austin Freeman scored 25 points, Jason Clark had 24, and No. 7 Georgetown forced 16 first-half turnovers in a 103-90 victory Saturday at Washington that ended Villanova’s 11-game winning streak.

Georgetown led by as many as 23 points in the first half and 50-31 at halftime. Villanova cut the margin to 10 but never threatened to complete the comeback in the game played on a day the nation’s capital was blanketed with well more than a foot of snow.

Willis leads UNLV over No. 12 BYU: Junior guard Tre’Von Willis had a career-high 33 points to lead UNLV to an 88-74 victory over No. 12 BYU at Las Vegas that pulled the Runnin’ Rebels into a first-place tie with the Cougars in the Mountain West.

Oklahoma holds off No. 9 Texas: Tommy Mason-Griffin scored 24 points, Cade Davis added 20 points and 10 rebounds for the second double-double of his career and Oklahoma beat No. 9 Texas 80-71 at Norman, Okla.

Hawks, Wizards postponed

NBA: The game between the Atlanta Hawks and host Washington Wizards was postponed because of the blizzard that battered the Mid-Atlantic region.

The NBA said that neither the Hawks or Wizards could fly to Washington after their games Friday night. The Wizards played at Orlando, Fla., and the Hawks hosted the Bulls. The game will be rescheduled.

Bryant out, but Lakers beat Blazers: Lamar Odom replaced an injured Kobe Bryant and matched his career high with 22 rebounds, and the Los Angeles Lakers broke their nine-game losing streak in Portland with a 99-82 victory over the Trail Blazers.

Bryant sat out with a sore left ankle. The 12-time All-Star and last year’s NBA Finals MVP had played in 235 straight games.

Stricker takes big lead at Riviera

Golf: Steve Stricker hit enough crisp irons and made his usual share of putts over 15 holes to pull away from the field at Riviera and build a five-shot lead going into the final day of the rain-delayed Northern Trust Open at Los Angeles.

Luke Donald finished his round at 5-under-par 66 just before the siren sounded and shared the clubhouse lead with J.B. Holmes (67) at 9-under 204.

Spokane native Alex Prugh finished his round at 5-under 66 and sits tied for eighth after three rounds with a 7-under 206.

Kings rally from three down, beat Wings

NHL: Michal Handzus scored his second goal on a rebound with 2:21 to play, and the Los Angeles Kings furiously rallied from a three-goal deficit to set a franchise record with their ninth straight victory, 4-3 over the Detroit Red Wings at Los Angeles.

Cal, UCLA combine for 22 1st-half points

Women’s College Basketball: California and UCLA combined for just 22 points in the first half, the fewest points in the opening 20 minutes in nearly six years.

UCLA missed its first 12 shots and didn’t score until Christina Nzekwe’s free throw with 10:06 left.

According to STATS LLC. it’s the fewest points in one half since Liberty and Birmingham Southern combined for 22 on Feb. 21, 2004. UCLA won the game at Berkeley, Calif., 44-32.

Texas college stars beat Nation team

College Football: LSU’s Trindon Holliday scored a pair of third-quarter touchdowns to help his Texas all-star team beat The Nation’s squad 36-17 at El Paso, Texas.

Holliday, a 5-foot-5 running back, scored first on a 67-yard pass from Ryan Perrilloux, a Jacksonville State senior quarterback, with 10:46 left in the third quarter. Holliday’s second trip to the end zone came about 5 minutes later on a 2-yard run.

Quality Road breaks track record in Donn

Horse Racing: Quality Road broke his track mark at Gulfstream Park while winning the $500,000 Donn Handicap at Hallandale Beach, Fla., by a record 12 3/4 lengths.

The Todd Pletcher-trained colt covered 11/8 miles in 1:47.49 with John Velazquez aboard, breaking the mark of 1:47.72 he set last year when winning the Florida Derby.

Peppi Knows wins Whirlaway disrupted by spill: Peppi Knows won the $100,000 Whirlaway Stakes at chilly Aqueduct Racetrack in New York after favorite Eightyfiveinafifty bolted through the outside rail on the first turn and unseated jockey Jorge Chavez.

The frightening spill resulted in Chavez being taken to a hospital complaining of soreness.

Three Day Rush was third and Papa’s Nice Cat was fourth in an early race for colts that could move on to the Kentucky Derby trail.

Rain cancels racing at Santa Anita: Racing was canceled at Santa Anita because of heavy rain that left the synthetic surface at the Arcadia, Calif., track unsuitable, forcing five stakes to be rescheduled.

Valero tops DeMarco for WBC belt

Boxing: Edwin Valero of Venezuela defeated challenger Antonio DeMarco of Mexico in their WBC lightweight title fight at Monterrey, Mexico.

Valero won the fight on a TKO after DeMarco sat in his corner and declined to come out for the 10th round.

Adamek beats Estrada in heavyweight fight: Tomasz Adamek beat Jason Estrada by unanimous decision in a heavyweight fight in his return to the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J.

Couture, Sonnen win at UFC 109

Mixed MartiaL Arts: Randy Couture stopped Mark Coleman with a rear naked choke to win a bout between two UFC hall-of-famers in their mid-40s in Las Vegas.

Coleman rolled and gave up his back to Couture, who then sunk in the submission attempt and forced the referee to stop the fight at 1:09 of the second round.

In the earlier co-main event, Chael Sonnen beat Nate Marquardt by unanimous decision, earning a shot at the middleweight title.

Oudin, Mattek-Sands win at U.S. Fed Cup

Tennis: Melanie Oudin and Bethanie Mattek-Sands won the opening singles to give the United States a 2-0 lead against France in the quarterfinals of the Fed Cup at Lievin, France.

Oudin defeated Pauline Parmentier 6-4, 6-4 after Mattek-Sands outlasted Alize Cornet 7-6 (7), 7-5.
