In brief: Group offers kids Valley pool passes

SPOKANE VALLEY – Spokane Valley Partners, 10814 E. Broadway Ave., is offering swim passes for children and teenagers up to age 18 for any of the three Valley pools.

To be eligible to receive the passes, the children must live between Havana Street and the Idaho border and must also be eligible to receive free or reduced lunch.

Team to join event for cancer cure

EAST CENTRAL – The Spokane Indians baseball team will help in the fight against breast cancer at “Pitch for the Cure” on July 17 when the team plays the Vancouver Canadians at Avista Stadium, 602 N. Havana St.

The one-mile walk around Avista Stadium will begin at 6 p.m. and the game will start at 6:30. Each participant will receive a free ticket to the game, T-shirt and a $10 donation to the Susan G. Komen Foundation on their behalf.

The walk is part of Breast Cancer Awareness Night. All Indians players will wear pink jerseys, play with pink bats and run on pink bases. The jerseys will be auctioned off after the game.

Actors wanted for upcoming shows

RIVERSIDE – The Spokane Civic Theatre is in need of actors for two upcoming performances.

Auditions for “BUDDY: The Buddy Holly Story” will be held on Wednesday, from 6:30 to 9 p.m., on the main stage at the Theatre, 1020 N. Howard St.

Roles needed include three men, appearing to be ages 22-32, for the specific roles of Buddy Holly and the Crickets. The focus for Buddy is vocals and the ability to play acoustic and electric guitar. The focus for the roles of Joe and Jerry are the ability to play musical instruments, along with some singing and minimal dialogue. Joe plays double bass, Jerry plays drums, and a fourth Cricket will be playing an additional electric guitar.

Those interested in auditioning should bring their own sheet music and be prepared to sing a verse and a chorus of a 1950s rock and roll or pop song. Accompanist will be provided. String players should bring their own instruments.

Performances will be held Sept. 24 through Oct. 24.

The Civic Theatre is also looking for one woman to play the role of Sister Leo in their production of “NUNsense.”

Auditions will be held on July 20 at 6:30 p.m. on the main stage at the Theatre.

The woman should appear to be between the ages of 20-30 and will be expected to perform a verse and a chorus from a contemporary musical.

Those interested in auditioning should bring their own sheet music. An accompanist will be provided. Dress for freedom of movement. Three to five years of ballet training is needed and en pointe is a plus.

Performances will be Nov. 19 to Dec. 19.

Registration starts for junior soccer

SPOKANE – Registration is now open for the Spokane Junior Soccer Fall 2010/Spring 2011 season for ages 4 to 15.

Interested players can register online at www.SpokaneSoccer.ORG or by calling (509) 747-5017.

Cost is $49 per person. Registration deadline is next Thursday. After Thursday, a $10 late fee will be added to the registration fee. Late registration will be accepted until the season begins.

Spokane Junior Soccer summer camps begin Monday and continue weekly for five weeks.

Camps are $50 per week, per person.

Speaker to discuss caregiving

LOGAN – Marty Richards, an author, teacher and long-term care consultant, will present a workshop for caregivers, “Caresharing: Strengthening the Bonds to those Coping with Dementia,” on July 21, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Barbieri Moot Court Room at Gonzaga University School of Law, 721 N. Cincinnati St.

The workshop will propose a new approach to traditional care, showing how to move from independent caregiving to interdependent caregiving by engaging the emotional aspects of caring for a loved one.

Richards has been a social worker and teacher for more than 40 years. She received her master’s degree in social work from the University of Washington in 1970 and has spent her career working in the community, in long-term care facilities and in institutions of higher learning. She is a state-licensed individual clinical social worker and author of “Caresharing: A reciprocal Approach to Caregiving and Care Receiving in the Complexities of Aging, Illness or Disability.”

Cost for the workshop is $35 for professionals, which includes a five-hour certificate of attendance, and $15 for family members, students and non-credit attendees. A box lunch will be provided during the noon hour.

Fire Station 99

marks anniversary

SPOKANE COUNTY – Spokane County Fire District 9 will have an open house to celebrate the one-year anniversary of Fire Station 99, 9105 N. Whitehouse St., on Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m.

Attendees will have an opportunity to tour the station, meet the firefighters of Station 99 and enjoy ice cream. Kids can also get their picture taken in a firetruck and say hello to Smokey the Bear.

Gospel group

to perform

LINCOLN HEIGHTS – Lincoln Heights Community Church, 3527 E. 29th Ave., will present contemporary Southern gospel group Blackwood Legacy on Sunday at 11 a.m.

High school artists to display work

CHENEY – Artwork by local high school students and art teachers will be featured at the “Legacy in Art Education” exhibition at Eastern Washington University’s Gallery of Art, beginning today.

A free reception will be held today at noon at the gallery to open the exhibit.

The artwork will be on display through Aug. 5. The Gallery is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
