Signed Defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom chose to return to the Detroit Red Wings instead of retiring. The star signed a one-year contract instead of hanging up his skates at the age of 40. Lidstrom was contemplating calling it a career. He has spent all of his 18 NHL seasons with the Red Wings. The Swede had nine goals and 40 assists for 49 points last season, his second-lowest total in 14, and wasn’t a finalist for the Norris Trophy for just the second time in more than a decade.

Died Former major league pitcher Jeriome Robertson, whose 15 wins for the Houston Astros led all rookies in 2003, has died. He was 33. Robertson was killed Saturday when he lost control of his motorcycle and crashed, the California Highway Patrol said.

Richard Jackson, who fielded cars in NASCAR’s top two levels for 26 years, has died. He was 74. Jackson formed Precision Products Racing with his brother, Leo Jackson Jr., in 1974. Bob Pressley drove for the team in what was the NASCAR Late Model Sportsman Division.

Welcomed Silver Stars coach Sandy Brondello has given birth to a baby girl. The coach of the WNBA team and her husband, associate head coach Olaf Lange, welcomed their second child Monday. Brondello is expected to miss two games before rejoining the team next week. They also have a 3-year-old boy.

Awarded Oklahoma State’s Caroline Hedwall has won the Honda Sports Award for golf. The sophomore is this year’s NCAA individual champion. Hedwall tied the NCAA record by shooting 12-under-par at the NCAA championships.

Continuing The lawsuit by former football coach Mike Leach over his firing from Texas Tech will move forward. State District Judge William C. Sowder struck down Texas Tech’s claim of sovereign immunity from the lawsuit. The judge says Tech waived its immunity by its conduct.

Ending Kyle Busch Motorsports is shutting down one of his financially strapped Truck Series teams after driver Tayler Malsam accepted a promotion to the Nationwide Series. Malsam will drive the No. 10 Toyota for Braun Racing starting Saturday at Nashville, Tenn.
