Zags edge BYU, 9-7

Mark Castellitto and Ernesto Ortiz homered for Gonzaga University in a 9-7 victory over Brigham Young in the Bulldogs’ home opener Monday night at the Patterson Baseball Complex and Washington Trust Field.

Ortiz had three hits and four RBIs to back pitcher Jeremy Stumetz, who allowed just one earned run and struck out six in 71/3 innings.

A five-run third inning was decisive for the Zags (8-7).

Softball

Linfield hit four home runs, two by Emily Keagbine in a 10-1, five-inning first-game win, in sweeping a Northwest Conference doubleheader at Whitworth.

The 15th-ranked Wildcats (9-1, 7-1 NWC) won the second game 6-2.

Kelsey Ayers in the first game and Lacey Kerr in the second singled in runs for Whitworth (1-7, 1-7).

Prep baseball

Cody Clark lost a no-hitter with two out in the sixth inning on a Tyler Ogden single in pitching Post Falls to a 4-1 win over visiting Lakeland in an Inland Empire League opener. Clark stuck out nine.
