Chiefs end trip with win
SWIFT CURRENT, Saskatchewan – Steven Kuhn and Tyler Johnson scored back-to-back goals in the third period and the Spokane Chiefs ended their six-game Western Hockey League Eastern Conference road swing on a high note, beating the Swift Current Broncos 3-1 Saturday.
After dropping their previous two games, the Chiefs outshot the Broncos (10-10) 50-21 to even their record at 8-8-1, moving them into third place in the Western Conference’s U.S. Division.
“We played with a lot of incentive and we deserved this win,” Chiefs coach Don Nachbaur said.
Collin Valcourt started the scoring for Spokane 2 minutes, 27 seconds into the second period. It was Valcourt’s second goal this week.
The Broncos rallied in the second period with a goal by Cody Eakin with 3:39 left before intermission.
The rest of the game was all Spokane. The Chiefs fired 19 shots in the third period, with Kuhn finding the net at the 14:05 mark and Johnson following it up with 20 seconds left, scoring on an empty net.
Spokane goaltender James Reid saved 20 of 21 attempts as Swift Current was held to 0 for 3 in power-play opportunities.
Over the road trip, the Chiefs finished 3-2-1 against the Eastern Conference.
Spokane returns home for the first time since hosting Prince George on Oct. 27, playing Edmonton at the Arena at 7 p.m. Friday.
