Area roundup: GU women cruise

Katelan Redmon scored 22 points to lead four Bulldogs in double figures as Gonzaga beat Whitman 114-40 on Sunday in a nonconference matchup at the McCarthey Athletic Center.

The Bulldogs (1-1) built an 18-0 lead before the Missionaries got on the board with a free throw 4 minutes, 33 seconds into the game. Gonzaga shot 59.7 percent from the field for the game, won the rebounding battle 55-30 and forced 25 turnovers while committing 10.

Courtney Vandersloot scored 17 points with 11 assists, Kayla Standish added 15 points and 11 rebounds and Janelle Bekkering contributed 12 points for the Bulldogs.

• Washington State fell behind 9-0 early to UC Davis and never recovered, falling 77-38 in nonconference action in Davis, Calif.

Katie Madison led the Cougars (0-2) with 12 points, and Jazmine Perkins and Carly Noyes added six each.

The Aggies held the Cougars to 25.5-percent shooting, including 0 for 19 from 3-point range.

• Eastern Washington forced 21 turnovers but was held to 34-percent shooting in a 77-58 nonconference loss to Portland in Cheney.

Tatjana Sparavalo and Brianne Ryan each scored 11 points to lead the Eagles (1-1). The Pilots’ Lauren Angel led all scorers with 22 points and added 10 rebounds.

Women’s soccer

Washington pulled off one of the biggest upsets in school history, beating No. 2 overall seed Portland in the second round of the NCAA tournament at Merlo Field in Portland.

The Huskies (12-8-2) won 10-9 in penalty kicks after a 1-1 tie in regulation and two overtime periods. UW advances to the tournament quarterfinals for the first time since 2004 and will travel to face UC Irvine on Saturday.

The Huskies’ goal was scored by McKenna Waitley in the 29th minute, and the Pilots answered with Sophie Schmidt’s goal 11 seconds later to tie the match.

Jorde LaFontaine-Kussman made 13 saves in regulation and overtime, one short of the school record.

Portland outshot Washington 27-6 and had 14 shots on goal to the Huskies’ four.

Men’s soccer

Gonzaga ended its season with a 2-0 loss to West Coast Conference co-champion Santa Clara in Santa Clara, Calif.

Collin Flynn won the season scoring title for the Bulldogs (4-15, 1-11 WCC) with four goals. Philippe Garre led Gonzaga with five assists.

Wrestling

North Idaho College came away from the Best of the West Open in Ashland, Ore., this weekend with two individual titles and five third-place finishes.

Marcell Dubose (285 pounds) and Jamelle Jones (197) completed undefeated weekends with title-match wins Sunday.

Jesse Neilson (174), Jake Mason (165), Braden Mowry (141), Brock Banta (133) and Kyle McCrite (125) all won Sunday for third place in their weight classes.

Junior hockey

Brycen Fisher and Guisseppe Dippolitto scored for the Spokane Braves (14-13) in a 6-2 loss to the Kimberley Dynamiters in Kootenay International Junior Hockey League play in Kimberley, British Columbia.
