Local briefs: Hayden Lake resident wins two golds, silvers
George Mathews of Hayden Lake won two gold and two silver medals at the Nevada Senior Olympics last weekend in Las Vegas.
Mathews, competing in the men’s 65-69-year-old division, won the 5k hammer with a throw of 146 feet and the 20-pound weight with a throw of 56-11 1/2.
He was second in the throws pentathlon with a score of 3,588 and the shot put (37-10 1/2).
Basketball
McKenzie Heaslet, who helped lead Colton to back-to-back girls State 1B championships, has signed a letter of intent with Lewis-Clark State, Warriors coach Brian Orr announced.
Heaslet, a 6-foot-1 forward, averaged 9.9 points and 7.1 rebounds last season as a junior while shooting 56 percent from the field, earning first-team All-Whitman County League and honorable mention All-District 9. She also averaged nearly 10 points in four state tournament games, and had 14 points and 10 rebounds in the semifinal win.
