Around the country: Tar Heels end woes at Virginia

T.J. Yates threw for three touchdowns and North Carolina won for the first time since 1981 at Scott Stadium, beating Virginia 44-10 Saturday night in Charlottesville, Va.

The Tar Heels (4-2, 2-1 ACC) had lost 14 consecutive games on the home field of the Cavaliers (2-4, 0-3).

Notre Dame 44, Western Michigan 20: Michael Floyd caught nine passes for 157 yards and three touchdowns and the Fighting Irish (4-3) pulled away in the third quarter to beat the Broncos (2-4) in South Bend, Ind., for their third straight victory.

Purdue 28, Minnesota 17: Dan Dierking ran for a career-high 126 yards and quarterback Rob Henry accounted for four TDs to lead the Boilermakers (4-2, 2-0 Big Ten) past the Golden Gophers (1-6, 0-3) in West Lafayette, Ind.

Rutgers 23, Army 20 (OT): Joe Martinek scored on a 1-yard run in overtime and the Scarlet Knights (4-2) rallied from a 14-point halftime deficit to beat the Black Knights (4-3) in East Rutherford, N.J.

Navy 28, SMU 21: Alexander Teich ran for a career-high 95 yards and two TDs, including the tiebreaking score with 1:38 left, and the Midshipmen (4-2) rallied to beat the Mustangs (4-3) in Annapolis, Md.

East Carolina 33, North Carolina State 27 (OT): Dominique Davis scored on a 1-yard keeper and Damon Magazu intercepted Russell Wilson’s final pass to help the Pirates (4-2) beat the Wolfpack (5-2) in overtime in Greenville, N.C.

Miami 28, Duke 13: Jacory Harris threw for one TD and ran for another, and the Hurricanes (4-2, 2-1 ACC) forced seven turnovers in a victory over the Blue Devils (1-5, 0-3) in Durham, N.C.

Virginia Tech 52, Wake Forest 21: Tyrod Taylor threw for 292 yards and three touchdowns and also rushed for a score to lead the Hokies (5-2, 3-0 ACC) to a rout over the Demon Deacons (2-5, 1-3) in Blacksburg, Va.

Pittsburgh 45, Syracuse 14: Tino Sunseri threw a career-high four touchdown passes and the Panthers (3-3, 1-0 Big East) roughed up the Orange (4-2, 1-1) in Syracuse, N.Y.

Eastern Michigan 41, Ball State 38 (OT): Alex Gillett connected with Ben Thayer for a 12-yard TD pass in overtime and the Eagles (1-6, 1-3 Mid-American Conference) ended an 18-game losing streak with a win over the Cardinals (2-5, 1-2) in Muncie, Ind. It was Eastern Michigan’s first win since Nov. 28, 2008.
