CdA boys expect to make noise at state soccer

His team has offense and defense. So first-year Coeur d’Alene boys soccer coach Jeff Lake is confident his team will fare well when the 5A state tournament begins a three-day run today at Idaho Falls.

Lake’s Vikings (12-3-2) open against defending state champ Centennial (11-3-3) at 10 a.m. PDT.

Lake City (9-4-3), which fell 2-1 in double overtime to CdA in the Region I final last Saturday, meets Timberline (10-4-3) at 1 p.m.

“We like our chances down there,” Lake said. “We’re going down there not just feeling good about being there, but we’re going to win some games.”

“I plan on going to state and doing something,” CdA junior forward Adam Borsheim said. “Last year we were individuals. This year we’re a team. We fight together, we work together, we hang out together. This is a true team. I’m excited for state to see where this team goes.”

By falling to CdA in the regional final, LC slipped into what may be the most difficult side of the bracket. It doesn’t matter to LC coach Chad Beadell.

“I could care less,” Beadell said. “I want the toughest team first when we’re fresh. They (CdA) might think they have an easier draw, but there’s no easy match at state.”

• In the 5A girls tourney, also at Idaho Falls, Region I champ Lake City (8-5-3) takes on Mountain View (12-3-2) at 10 a.m. Lewiston (8-2-6), which qualified for state for the first time, meets defending state champ Boise (14-3-0) at 1 p.m.

• The State 4A boys tournament is at Lake City and the girls is at Post Falls. In a boys opener, Region I champ Moscow (10-8-0) takes on Columbia (12-5-1) at 11 a.m. In a girls opener, Region I champ and defending state champ Sandpoint (7-6-5) goes against Kuna (14-4-1) at 11.

• The State 3A boys and girls tournaments are at Twin Falls.

In boys, District I-II champ Bonners Ferry (15-3-0) faces Marsh Valley at 10 a.m. In girls, District I-II champ and first-time qualifier Timberlake (10-3-3) plays Teton (14-3-1) at 1 p.m.
