Area roundup: Whitworth Pirates topple Whitman

Kaimi Rocha and Amanda Grumbach combined for 26 kills Wednesday as Whitworth defeated visiting Whitman 25-20, 16-25, 25-16, 25-18 in Northwest Conference volleyball.

Whitworth (12-6, 9-2) moved within one-half game of first-place Puget Sound.

The Pioneers are 6-14, 3-8.

Men’s soccer

Zach Knechtges recorded the shutout as visiting Community Colleges of Spokane (8-4-3, 5-2-2) finished in a scoreless tie with East Division-leading Columbia Basin (10-2-2, 8-0-1) in NWAACC play at Pasco.

CCS tied Treasure Valley for second place.

Women’s soccer

Tabitha Grow fed Lateashea Currie for a goal with 1 minute left as CC Spokane (8-3-2, 5-3-2 NWAACC) tied Columbia Basin 1-1 at Pasco.

Rachel Dittmer scored at 15 minutes for the Hawks (7-5-2, 6-2-2). East Division second-place Columbia Basin has 20 points, three more than the third-place Sasquatch.
