In brief: Spokane AIDS Walk registration open

RIVERFRONT PARK – Early registration is now available for the Spokane AIDS Walk, Sept. 11 at Riverfront Park.

The walk, themed “Cover Your Head!,” will begin at 10:30 a.m. and includes hat contests for the most original hat and most creative hat, and prizes for individuals and teams raising the most money. Registration is also available the day of the walk and will begin at 9:30 a.m.

All proceeds support the Spokane AIDS Network in its work to serve those living with HIV and AIDS and to prevent the spread of the disease.

To register, visit www.SpokaneAIDS.org. Cost is $20 for adults and $15 for children/youth; each participant will receive a T-shirt and water bottle. Participants can register as individuals, form a team or join an existing team. Individuals and teams will compete against one another in recruiting members and raising funds.

“Romeo and Harriet” opens Sept. 16

GREEN BLUFF – The Old Orchard Theatre at the Green Bluff Grange, 9809 E. Greenbluff Road, will perform “Romeo and Harriet,” on Sept. 16 through Sept. 18; Sept. 23 through Sept. 25 at 7 p.m. and Sept. 19 and Sept. 26 at 2 p.m.

Tickets for the musical tragic comedy are $12 for premium seats and $7 for general seats.

Proceeds from the show will benefit the Green Bluff Grange Scholarship Program.

Symphony concert at Pavillion Park

LIBERTY LAKE – The Spokane Symphony will present its annual Lud Kramer Memorial Concert Saturday at 6 p.m. at Pavillion Park, 727 N. Molter Road.

Special season ticket prices for the symphony will be available to anyone attending this free concert.

Tourism-centered funding available

SPOKANE VALLEY – The city of Spokane Valley is now accepting applications for tourism promotion funding. The money is available to agencies and groups that promote tourism with the goal of improving economic activity in the city. An official grant proposal request must be submitted to the city by 4 p.m. Sept. 17. The proposals are available online at www.spokanevalley.org.

All proposals will be reviewed by the Spokane Valley Lodging Tax Advisory Committee, which will provide recommendations to the city council for a final decision. For more information, call Sarah Davenport at (509) 720-5041.

Comp Plan amendments being accepted

SPOKANE VALLEY – The city of Spokane Valley is now accepting applications for amendments to the Comprehensive Plan. Changes to the plan may only be done once a year by state law.

All proposed amendments must be received by the city by Nov. 1. Those interested in making an amendment to the plan must schedule a pre-application meeting by calling Mike Basinger at (509) 720-5331.

The amendments will be reviewed by the Planning Commission and public hearings will be held. More information is available online at www.spokanevalley.org.

Artist demonstrations at Pottery Plus

RIVERSIDE – Pottery Place Plus, 203 N. Washington St., will host “Artists in Action” on Sept. 11, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sept. 12, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Area artists will demonstrate their work, including wheel-thrown and hand-built pottery, silk painting, paper making, raku pottery, papier-mâché, basket weaving, spinning, bead weaving, knitting and felting and metal working. Saturday’s works will feature greeting cards and scratch art.

Artists will have works for sale and host studios will have light refreshments. The event is free and open to the public.
