Ganzer helps WSU sweep Eastern

Meagan Ganzer tied a career high with 30 kills and Sara Biondi had 37 assists as Washington State swept Eastern Washington at the Cougar Challenge volleyball tournament Thursday in Pullman.

The Cougars won 25-20, 25-23, 28-26 to improve to 4-3 this season. The Eagles dropped to 1-6.

Chenoa Coviare led Eastern with 10 kills, and Shelby Puckett added nine. Laney Brown had 17 assists and Lindsay Niemeier notched 16.

The Eagles face Cal Poly today at 1 p.m. and Washington State plays Montana State at 7 p.m. The tournament concludes Saturday, with Montana State and Eastern facing off at 11 a.m. and Washington State and Cal Poly meeting at 8 p.m. All matches are at Bohler Gym.

• Cal Poly ruined Idaho’s home opener, winning in three sets at Memorial Gym. The Mustangs won 25-23, 25-15, 25-21 to drop the Vandals to 2-4.

Alicia Milo had 13 kills and Allison Walker added seven for Idaho, and Jenny Feicht had 16 assists.

• Kealey Johnson had 16 digs and 11 kills and Kelsey Kurtz had 29 assists and 15 digs as Community Colleges of Spokane swept Clackamas Community College at Spokane Falls. CCS won 25-14, 25-9, 25-17 to improve to 7-1 overall, 2-0 NWAACC.

Hockey

Anthony Bardaro scored twice and added an assist as the Spokane Chiefs won their third straight preseason game, 7-2 over the Lethbridge Hurricanes at the Red Lion Hotels Pre-Season Tournament in Kennewick.

Six Chiefs (3-1) found the back of the net.

Bardaro scored Spokane’s first two goals, with his first coming just 1:42 into the game, and Reid Gow and Collin Valcourt also connected in the first period. Mike Aviani and Dominik Uher lit the lamp in the second period, and Matt Marantz closed the scoring for the Chiefs.

Mac Engel and Chris Sharkey split the goaltending duties for Spokane. Engel stopped all seven shots he faced, and Sharkey made 15 saves and allowed two goals.

Boys soccer

Inland Empire League 5A: Lake City (1-0 league) beat Lewiston (0-2) 7-0 at Lewiston. No details were available.

Intermountain League: Alex Mendez had a goal and two assists as Bonners Ferry (3-0 league) beat Priest River (0-2) 4-1 at Bonners Ferry, which outshot PR 24-3.

High school volleyball

Inland Empire League 5A: Post Falls (2-0 league) outlasted Lewiston (0-1) in four sets, winning 16-25, 26-24, 25-15, 25-16 at Lewiston. Allison Meehan had 13 assists, six digs and six kills for PF. … Lake City (1-1) beat Coeur d’Alene 25-16, 25-23, 25-19 at CdA. Ashley Hammans had 15 assists and Demi Johnson added 20 digs for the Viks (0-1).

Inland Empire League 4A: Ariel Moe had 15 assists and Blake Plaster contributed 25 digs as Sandpoint beat Moscow 25-17, 25-19, 25-22 at Moscow in the league opener for both teams.

Intermountain League: Taylor Samuelson had 17 assists and Shayne Waechter finished with seven kills as Kellogg beat Timberlake 25-22, 16-25, 25-21, 25-19 in a league opener at Timberlake. Amanda Swanson had 22 digs in a losing cause for Timberlake. … St. Maries swept Bonners Ferry 25-7, 25-16, 25-16 in a league opener at St. Maries.
