Prep roundup: Highlanders turn heads during meets

With a course-record performance by Shadle Park’s Nathan Weitz and Kendra Weitz leading the charge for the Shadle Park girls, Saturday’s cross country turned into a showcase for the Highlanders.

Farragut Invite: Nathan Weitz and the SP boys took second at Farragut State Park with a score of 42. Weitz led the pack, finishing in 16 minutes, 3.7 seconds and setting a course record.

Coeur d’Alene’s David Norris (16:46.2) placed second, leading a pack of Viking runners who finished second, fourth, fifth, sixth and eighth en route to a first-place finish with 25 points.

The Vikings made it a sweep in the meet with a first-place finish by the girls, led by Kinsey Gomez’s winning time of 19:28.3.

The Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls) boys (20) and Timberlake girls (41) were the top small-school teams at the meet.

Steilacoom meet: Kendra Weitz finished in 18:48 to lead three Shadle Park girls who finished in the top five at Fort Steilacoom.

The Highlanders scored 73 points to outpace Peninsula (122) and Olympia (158) for first place. Sarah Reiter of Lindbergh earned the individual title with a meet-record time of 18:17.

Mountain West Classic: Andrew Gardner of Mead finished in 15:05.87 to earn the individual title, while Lewis and Clark took the team title, scoring 59 points at the University of Montana Golf Course in Missoula.

LC’s Tigers had two runners finish in the top 10, led by Kenji Bierig, who took second in 15:14.38.

Mead’s Panthers tallied 219 points in the girls race, finishing fourth, 145 points off the pace of top finisher Bozeman (74). Baylee Mires led Mead’s effort in 17:40.35, good for second behind Bozeman’s Caroline Hardine.

South Whidbey Invitational: Alison Keenan (19:42.49) and Hannah Allen (19:42.97) finished 10th and 11th, respectively, helping Lewis and Clark to a sixth-place finish at South Whidbey High School in Langley, Wash.

Salt Creek Invitational: Kaden Woolf took fifth in 15:40.13 and John Wiser finished 10th in 15:49.14 as Central Valley recorded a second-place finish with 68 points behind Bellevue (37) at Port Angeles, Wash.

Boys soccer

IEL: Adam Borshiem kicked home a pair of goals in the second half to lead Coeur d’Alene (7-0-1, 3-0) to a 2-1 comeback win against Moscow (2-3, 0-1) in CdA. … Reece Knudsen scored on a penalty kick in the 65th minute, breaking a scoreless tie and leading Post Falls (4-1, 2-1) 1-0 over Lakeland (1-8, 0-2) in PF. … Tanner Williams scored three goals in the first 52 minutes and Sandpoint (7-1-1, 3-0) shut out Lewiston (1-5, 0-4) 6-0 in Sandpoint.

Intermountain: Stephen Bachman tallied a pair of goals and Alex Mendez added a goal and an assist for Bonners Ferry (7-3, 4-0), which continued to roll unbeaten through league play with a 6-0 victory over Priest River (0-3, 0-3) in PR.

Girls soccer

IEL: Emilee Cordon scored twice and Keira Turrell’s goal in the 62nd minute proved to be the clincher for host Coeur d’Alene (5-3-1, 3-1), which beat Moscow (4-3-1, 2-2) 4-3.

Volleyball

IEL: Chelsea Waters had four of her seven blocks in the match-turning third game as host Lewiston (15-2, 3-1) rallied from a 0-2 deficit to defeat Sandpoint 3-2. Paige Schlader had nine digs, 22 assists and three aces for Lewiston.
