Naval training squadron commander relieved of duty

Associated Press
NAVAL AIR STATION WHIDBEY ISLAND, Wash. (AP) — The commander of a training squadron for electrical warfare aircraft at the Whidbey Island Naval Air Station has been relieved of duty, following a drunken driving stop in Anacortes. The Navy says Cmdr. Timothy F. Murphy was relieved Monday due to a loss of confidence in his ability to command. He led Electronic Attack Squadron VAQ129, which trains Navy and Marine pilots in EA-6B Prowler and EA-18G Growler aircraft. The planes are typically deployed on aircraft carriers. The Navy says Murphy was cited for DUI early Sunday by Anacortes police. The seattlepi.com reports Murphy has more than 3,400 flight hours and 680 carrier landings, primarily in the EA-6B. His awards include the Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal and Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal.
