Ruby Roberts set a Washington State University freshman record in the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase Thursday, placing third in the Open A section at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif.
Roberts finished in 10 minutes, 40.24 seconds to break Meghan Leonard’s 10:44.91 effort from 2005. Idaho freshman Alycia Butterworth placed 10th in 10:53.06.
WSU’s Andrew Gonzales finished 13th in the men’s Olympic Development Elite 3,000, timing a lifetime-best 8:59.46.
Idaho junior Andrew Blaser placed second in the decathlon, setting personal bests in five of 10 events on his way to a career-best 6,610 points.
Idaho head coach Don Verlin announced the signing of guard Mansa Habeeb of Buffalo, N.Y., to a letter of intent.
Habeeb (6-foot-3, 210 pounds) led Southeastern Iowa CC to fourth place at this year’s NJCAAA national tournament. He averaged 12.8 points and 5.3 rebounds per game while shooting 51 percent from the floor.
