Gonzaga Prep, Ferris open with wins

Will Kuharski and Cory Sago were a combined 5 for 7 with six runs batted in Tuesday night as host Gonzaga Prep opened the Junior State Legion tournament with a 12-9 win over Chehalis.

At University High, Tim Yoshihara scatted four hits and struck out five to lead Ferris to a 14-1 win over Montesano in six innings. Duncan McNally and Wes Kopp scored three runs apiece for Ferris.

Also at U-Hi, Caleb Hamilton pitched a two-hitter, striking out seven and walking four, to lead Woodinville to a 5-1 win over University. Tommy Wick doubled and tripled and drove in three runs for Woodinville. Monte Thies had both hits for U-Hi.

At G-Prep, Levi Novak struck out nine and pitched a five-hitter to guide Lakeside Recovery Grays to a 6-2 win over Mead. Tucker Hoch went 2 for 3 for Mead. … Joel Trujillo had four hits and four RBIs as Burlington beat Asotin County 16-10.
