In brief: Race driver rolls car at 200 mph

Oregon-based jet car driver Darin Bay rolled his car going 200 mph at the Spokane County Raceway on Friday night.

Raceway drag strip manager Cindy Gibbs said Bay was OK and talking after the 9:45 p.m. crash. He was being taken to Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center to be checked out, she said.

Bay’s car, Devastator, was making a single pass on the drag strip and rolled at the end of the track. Jet cars can hit 300 mph, Gibbs said.

“It’s unbelievable the safety equipment these guys have,” she said.

Car chase sends three to hospital

A stolen car fleeing sheriff’s deputies hit a pickup at Trent Avenue and Flora Road about 9:30 p.m. Friday, sending three people to the hospital.

A deputy spotted the sedan and attempted to pull it over on Upriver Drive, said sheriff’s Deputy Craig Chamberlin. The car’s driver turned off the lights and took off, eventually heading east on Wellesley Avenue.

Officers called off pursuit as they advanced the 90-degree turn where Wellesley turns into Flora. The stolen sedan, still with its light off, navigated the turn and headed across Trent, where it clipped a pickup and rolled about 50 yards before resting on its top, Chamberlin said

The sedan’s driver and two passengers were transported to a local hospital. A fourth passenger was treated at the scene.

Chamberlin said the sedan’s driver would be charged with vehicular assault when he is released from the hospital.

Melee leads to serious injury

At least 20 people were involved in a fight in Spokane Valley on Friday.

One juvenile was arrested on an unrelated warrant, but detectives continued to investigate the early-morning melee that left one person seriously injured, according to the Spokane Valley Police Department.

Sgt. Dave Reagan said a dispute between a woman’s “two suitors” apparently led to a scheduled fight at a home in the area of East Fourth Avenue and South Sullivan Road.

One man arrived to find the other having a party with several other people, so he left and returned with his own group of friends.

“An agreed-upon fight between the two turned into a half dozen or more combatants in the street,” Reagan said in a news release.

“The fight eventually moved to the Global Credit Union parking lot which is where officers found the mob when they arrived.”

Officers arrived about 4 a.m. and spent five hours tracking down participants.

Motorcycle chase ends in arrest

A motorcyclist was arrested after a chase that began when police allegedly clocked him driving 110 mph on U.S. Highway 195 Thursday.

Another motorcyclist driving alongside the biker at 110 mph escaped in Moscow, Idaho, according to the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office.

The arrested rider, Ryan J. Peil, 22, of Cheney, was booked into jail on a charge of eluding police.

He told deputies he didn’t know the other driver.
