In brief: Human remains found near river

Kootenai County sheriff’s detectives are investigating human remains found on a vacant piece of land near the Coeur d’Alene River.

Deputies responded Saturday about 10:45 a.m. to an area off Highway 3, just south of the community of Rose Lake, where a pair of campers found the skeletal remains, a Kootenai County Sheriff’s Department news release said.

“The body appears to have been there for some time,” Lt. Stu Miller said in the news release.

The age and gender of the body, as well as the cause of death, were unknown.

Detectives spent Saturday processing the scene and collecting the remains. The case remains under investigation, and information will be released as it becomes available, the news release said.

Motorcylist injured in crash with SUV

The Idaho State Police responded to a collision involving a motorcycle near Coeur d’Alene about 8:27 p.m. Friday night.

Brendon J. Lind, 23, of Coeur d’Alene, was westbound on Best Avenue on a Kawasaki ZR750. Darren Wardsworth, 47, of Coeur d’Alene, was eastbound on Best in a Chevrolet Trailblazer, according to an ISP news release. Wardsworth stopped in the turn lane to northbound 10th Place, then turned left in front of Lind, causing them to collide.

Lind was taken to Kootenai Medical Center, where he was in good condition Saturday evening.

Wardsworth was uninjured.

Alcohol suspected in one-car crash

A Colfax man was airlifted to Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center after driving off an embankment Friday night.

Richard W. Olson, 73, was listed in critical condition Saturday evening. The Washington State Patrol responded to the crash about 10:07 p.m., according to a WSP news release.

Olson was westbound on Highway 272 in Whitman County when he failed to negotiate a curve and went over an embankment, the news release said. He will be charged with driving under the influence, the news release said.

Olson was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

Motorcycle crash injures driver, rider

A Spokane Valley man was airlifted to a hospital after crashing his motorcycle in Adams County on Saturday evening.

Charles T. Herner, 72, was taken to Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center, where he was listed in serious condition Saturday night.

He was northbound on Highway 261 on a Harley-Davidson when he failed to negotiate a curve and went off the road, according to the Washington State Patrol.

His passenger, Laraine E. Herner, 69, also of Spokane Valley, was transported to East Adams Rural Hospital, then taken to Sacred Heart by ambulance. Her condition was not available Saturday night.

The WSP responded to the crash at 3:38 p.m.

Charges are pending, according to the news release. Both were wearing a helmet.
