SOUNDERS WIN

Alvaro Fernandez scored the only goal of the match in the first half and the Seattle Sounders defeated defending champion and host Monterrey, Mexico, in the CONCACAF Champions League on Tuesday night. Seattle climbed to the top of its group after two rounds with six points, three better than Monterrey, which lost for the first time in 14 Champions League matches. Fernandez’s goal came in the 38th minute off a pass from Pat Noonan, scoring from the from the edge of the goal area into the upper-right corner of the net. It was the Sounders’ first victory over Monterrey in three tries, losing twice last year, once at home and once on the road.
