In brief: SUV fatally hits Dalai Lama’s kin

PALM COAST, Fla. – Officials say the nephew of the Dalai Lama has been killed along the side of a Florida highway during a 300-mile “Walk for Tibet.”

The Florida Highway Patrol says 45-year-old Jigme K. Norbu was hit by an SUV about 7:30 Monday night along State Road A1A.

According to www. ambassadorforworld peace.org, Norbu was walking on Valentine’s Day from St. Augustine south to West Palm Beach to bring awareness to the Tibetan struggle for independence from China.

Norbu, of Bloomington, Ind., was the son of the Dalai Lama’s late brother.

Comet, NASA grow closer

PASADENA, Calif. – A NASA spacecraft flew by a comet half the size of Manhattan for a nighttime rendezvous on Valentine’s Day.

The Stardust craft, speeding at 24,000 mph, came within 112 miles of the surface of comet Tempel 1 on Monday.

Scientists and engineers clapped when they received a signal from Stardust craft that it had snapped six dozen pictures as planned.

It’s the first time that a comet has been visited by two different spacecraft. In 2005, another NASA craft, named Deep Impact, unleashed a copper bullet that carved a crater on Tempel 1.
